Daily Reflection with Fr. Tomas Del Valle-Reyes

Dear Friends: Praying is not easy. Our daily routine calls for our full attention. And the world around us puts little value on prayer; our lives are full of material things but at the same time are getting emptier in God’s value.

For this reason, I will post a daily reflection and as you visit this site may the Holy Spirit within you come to your aid and guide you gently to the God who loves you

A Little Rain

I asked this question, of my Father above, "Why do bad things happen to the people I love?"
The answer has long been misunderstood,
Why tragedy occurs to the just and the good.
The Lord whispered softly, in a voice sweet and low, "You'll find the answer in the Book I left you, centuries ago."
He allows the rain to fall on His sheep, To keep us humble, forgiving, and meek.
A little rain must fall on every life.
This world is full of sorrow and strife.
He makes the rain fall on the lost and unjust, In order to gain their repentance and trust.
He hopes to increase our virtues And to get our priorities straight, So, when the death angel comes, to carry us home, He'll be waiting for us at the gate.

THE GIFT

Here is a true story about a nine year old boy who lived in a rural town in Tennessee.
His house was in a poor area of the community.

A church had a bus ministry that came knocking on his door one Saturday afternoon. The kid came to answer the door and greeted the bus pastor.
The bus pastor asked if his parents were home, and the small boy told him that his parents take off every weekend and leave him at home to take care of his little brother.
The bus pastor couldn't believe what the kid said and asked him to repeat it.
The youngster gave the same answer, and the bus pastor asked to come in and talk with him. They went into the living room and sat down on an old couch with the foam and springs exposed.
The bus pastor asked the kid, "Where do you go to church?"
The young boy surprised the visitor by replying, "I've never been to church in my whole life."
The bus pastor thought to himself about the fact that his church was less than three miles from the child's house.
"Are you sure you have never been to church?" he asked again.
"I sure haven't," came his answer.
Then the bus pastor said, "Well, son, more important than going to church, have you ever heard the greatest love story ever told?", and then proceeded to share the Gospel with this little nine year old boy
The young lad's heart began to be tenderized, and at the end of the bus pastor's story, the bus pastor asked if the boy wanted to receive this free gift from God.
The youngster exclaimed, "You bet!" The kid and the bus pastor got on their knees and the lad invited Jesus into his little heart and received the free gift of salvation.
They both stood up and the bus pastor asked if he could pick the kid up for church the next morning. "Sure," the nine year old replied.
The bus pastor got to the house early the next morning and found the lights off.
He let himself in, snaked his way through the house, and found the little boy asleep in his bed.
He woke up the little boy and his brother and helped get them dressed.
They got on the bus and ate a donut for breakfast on their way to church.
Keep in mind that this boy had never been to church before.
The church was a real big one.
The little kid just sat there, clueless of what was going on.
A few minutes into the service, these tall unhappy guys walked down to the front and picked up some wooden plates.
One of the men prayed and the kid, with utter fascination, watched them walk up and down the aisles. He still didn't know what was going on.
All of a sudden, like a bolt of lightning, it hit the kid what was taking place.
These people must be giving money to Jesus.
He then reflected on the free gift of life he had received just twenty-four hours earlier.
He immediately searched his pockets, front and back, and couldn't find a thing to give Jesus.
By this time the offering plate was being passed down his aisle and, with a broken heart, he just grabbed the plate and held on to it.
He finally let go and watched it pass on down the aisle.
He turned around to see it passed down the aisle behind him.
And then his eyes remained glued on the plate as it was passed back and forth, all the way to the rear of the sanctuary.
Then he had an idea. This little nine year old boy, in front of God and everybody, got up out of his seat. He walked about eight rows back, grabbed the usher by the coat and asked to hold the plate one more time.
Then he did the most astounding thing I have ever heard of.
He took the plate, sat it on the carpeted church floor and stepped into the center of it.
As he stood there, he lifted his little head up and said, "Jesus, I don't have anything to give you today, but just me. I give you me!"-

Take away this
Disappointment

Dear God, I pray for my brothers and sisters and others in my circle of family and friends who are struggling with challenges...
When they're disappointed that You haven't answered their prayers or haven't seemed to make any move to change things yet, forgive their impatience.
Help them to live like the prophets of old, who were patient even when they had to suffer, and who didn't quit though they must have felt like it sometimes.
Help these I'm praying for not to quit either. (James 5:10–11a)
Help them to trust You and believe that You care, that You haven't forgotten them—and You won't! When trouble comes their way, when they're facing tests and challenges, help them be willing to thank You in all circumstances, difficult as that is. (Nahum 1:7a; Isaiah 49:15b; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 5:20)
Help them to love You with all their hearts, souls, and minds, for You cause all things to work together for our good when we love You and are called according to Your purpose.
Help them realize that somehow You're fitting them into Your plans.
Help their love for You to be as steadfast and unchanging as Your love for them. (Matthew 22:37; Romans 8:28, 38–39)
May they never question Your love, knowing it was settled once and forever at the cross. (1 John 4:10)
In Jesus' name, amen.

Give Your Life To Jesus

When Jesus comes into your life,
and dwells within your heart,
You'll never be the same again,
and that's the greatest part.
For man is weak and sinful,
and he struggles to survive,
But when Jesus isn't in his life,
he's only just alive.

Material wealth is not enough,
this he'll find is true,
The reason he'll not understand,
and he'll know not what to do.

For happiness and peace of mind,
are elusive as the breeze,
His heart and soul are restless,
like the ever endless seas.

But Jesus is the savior
of man's sick and troubled soul,
And He can take a broken life,
and make it new and whole.

So give your life to Jesus,
let Him cleanse your heart and soul,
And eternal life in heaven
will be your life's new goal.

God Jesus and Me

Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the Surgeon come out of the operating room. She said:
"How is my little boy?
Is he going to be O.K.?
When can I see him?"
The Surgeon said, "I'm sorry, we did all we could."
Sally said, "Why do little children get cancer?
Doesn't GOD care any more?
GOD, where were you when my son needed you?"
The Surgeon said, "One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes to let you spend time with your son's remains before it's transported to the university."
Sally asked that the nurse stay with her while she said good-bye to her son.
Sally ran her fingers through his thick red curly hair.
The nurse said, "Would you like a lock of his hair?" Sally nodded yes
The nurse cut a lock of his hair and put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally.
Sally said, "It was Jimmy's idea to give his body to the university for study.
He said it might help somebody else," and that is what he wanted.
I said no at first, but Jimmy said, "Mom I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy to be able to spend one more day with his mother." Sally said, "My Jimmy had a heart of gold, always thinking of someone else and always wanting to help others if he could."
Sally walked out of the Children's Hospital for the last time now after spending most of the last 6 months there. She sat the bag with Jimmy's things in it on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was hard and it was even harder to go into an empty house.
She took the bag to Jimmy's room and started placing the model cars and things back in his room exactly where he always kept them. She laid down across his bed and cried herself to sleep holding his pillow.
Sally woke up about midnight, and laying beside her on the bed was a letter folded up. She opened the letter and it said:
Dear Mom,
I know your going to miss me, but don't think that I will ever forget you or stop loving you because I'm not around to say I LOVE YOU. I'll think of you every day mom, and I'll love you even more each day.

Some day we will see each other again.
If you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so lonely, he can have my room and my old stuff to play with.

If you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the same things as us boys do, so you will have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like.
Don't be sad when you think about me.

This is really a great place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything here.
The angels are so friendly and I love to watch them fly.
Jesus doesn't look like any of the pictures I saw of Him, but I knew it was Him as soon as I saw Him. He took me to see GOD! And guess what mom? I got to sit on GOD'S knee and talk to Him like I was somebody important.

I told GOD that I wanted to write you a letter and tell you good-bye and everything, but I knew that wasn't allowed.
God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter with. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel that is going to drop this letter off to you.
God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him about -- where was He when I needed him? God said, "The same place He was when Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. "
Oh, by the way Mom, nobody else can see what is written on this paper but you. To everyone else, it looks like a blank piece of paper.
I have to give God His pen back now. He has some more names to write in the Book Of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for Supper. I'm sure the food will be great.
I almost forgot to let you know -- Now I don't hurt anymore and the cancer is all gone. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore. And God couldn't stand to see me suffer the pain either, so He sent The Angel of Mercy to get me. The Angel said I was Special Delivery!
Signed with love from:

Psalm 23 Prayer

1. The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.

3. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointment my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Why should I walk Alone?

Why should I walk Alone? When the dark days
come and the strong winds blow.
Why do I find myself walking Alone?
When the enemy strikes or knocks me out,
I often find myself Alone.
Who will wipe away these flowing tears and embrace
my silent fears? In the sea of my despair
I find myself Alone.
I cry our for someone, anyone,
Please don't leave me Alone!
When in the midst of this agony I hear a voice speaking
to me. " Why should you walk Alone?
You have never been completely Alone!
For I promised never to leave nor forsake you. I promised
if you would only trust and lean on me, I would be
faithful and just. I am not man, that I should lie;
neither the son of man, that I should repent.

My child you have never truly walked or stood Alone.
In fact, when times seemed the worst for you,
I carried you.
I picked you you out of the muck and miry clay, and set
your feet upon Christ the Solid Rock to stay.
When you were sinking deep in despair,
I caught you and set you upon Eagle Wings.

So my child take heart and dry your tears for
you are not Alone. Look around and realize you are soaring
high in the sky on the Wings of Eagles, strong and
secure where you can run and not get weary,
walk and not faint."
When I stopped and looked back over my life,
standing there with God, looking at my future,
I knew at that moment I am never Alone!

A BETTER UNDERSTANDING

A woman and her dog were walking along a road. The woman was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to her that she was dead. She remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. She wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble.
At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When she was standing before it, she saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
She and the dog walked toward the gate, and as she got closer, she saw a
man at a desk to one side. When she was close enough, she called out, "
Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, ma'am," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the woman asked.
"Of course. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward her dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we don't accept pets."The woman thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way she had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, she came to a dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As she approached the gate, she saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" she called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place
that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink, then she gave some to the dog.
When they were full, she and the dog walked back toward the man
who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said.
"The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates?Nope.
That's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they
screen out the folks who won't leave their best friends behind."
