Daily Reflection with Fr. Tomas Del Valle-Reyes

Dear Friends: Praying is not easy. Our daily routine calls for our full attention. And the world around us puts little value on prayer; our lives are full of material things but at the same time are getting emptier in God’s value.

For this reason, I will post a daily reflection and as you visit this site may the Holy Spirit within you come to your aid and guide you gently to the God who loves you
.

Luke 12, 32-34

'Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good
pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Sell your possessions, and give alms.
Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out,
an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.'
What are you saying to me, Lord?
Jesus, you always welcomed little children when you walked on this earth.
Teach me to have a childlike trust in you and to live in the knowledge that you will never abandon me.
Amen

Christmas Eve Prayer

"Blessed Shining Night of Lights
Pointing out the newborn babe
Who came to show our world that love
Is by far the truest way.
To find the path to heaven's home
To make our searching not in vain
To show the way that fills our soul
With heavenly light day by day.
Blessed Shining Light of Lights
We find you in our heart each day
And by our caring, sharing acts
We go forth, not led astray.
Blessed Babe of Golden Light
Never forgotten, here to stay
Living on eternally Hand and hand with us each day.
Living on eternally
Living in joy with us today!"

ON THE WINGS OF PRAYER

Just close your eyes and open your heart,
And feel your worries and cares depart.
Just yield yourself to the Father above,
And let Him hold you secure in His love.
For life on earth grows more involved,
With endless problems that can't be solved.
But God only ask us to do our best,
Then He will take over and finish the rest.
So when you are tired, discouraged and blue,
There is always one door that is open to you.
And that is the door to The House of Prayer,
And you'll find God waiting to meet you there.
And The House of Prayer is no further away,
Than the quiet spot where you kneel and pray.
For the heart is a temple when God is there,
As we place ourselves in His loving care.
And He hears every prayer and answers each one,
When we Pray in His name - Thy will be done.
The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear,
Are lifted away on the wings of a prayer.

A Christmas Creed

I believe in Jesus Christ and in the beauty of the gospel begun in Bethlehem.

I believe in the one whose spirit glorified a little town;
and whose spirit still brings music to persons all over the world, in towns both large and small.

I believe in the one for whom the crowded inn could find no room, and I confess that my heart still sometimes wants to exclude Christ from my life today.

I believe in the one who the rulers of the earth ignored and the proud could never understand; whose life was among common people, whose welcome came from persons of hungry hearts.

I believe in the one who proclaimed the love of God to be invincible:

I believe in the one whose cradle was a mother's arms, whose modest home in Nazareth had love for its only wealth, who looked at persons and made them see what God's love saw in them, who by love brought sinners back to purity, and lifted human weakness up to meet the strength of God.

I confess my ever-lasting need of God: The need of forgiveness for our selfishness and greed, the need of new life for empty souls, the need of love for hearts grown cold.

I believe in God who gives us the best of himself
I believe in Jesus, the son of the living God, born in Bethlehem this night, for me and for the world.

The Hammer

I was in the crowd the day that Jesus died
And as He hung upon that cross, His mother cried
I saw the crown of thorns He wore
The stripes on His back
The water and the blood ran out
And then the sky turned black
My mind was filled with anger
My heart filled with shame
The man brought only healing
Well who could bring Him pain
Why does it seem the strong
They always victimize the weak
And suddenly I found myself
Standing to my feet
And I cried

Who nailed Him there?
This Child of peace and mercy
Who nailed Him there?
Come and face me like a man
Who nailed Him there?
And the crowd began to mock me
I cried Oh my God I just don't understand
Then I turned and saw the hammer
In my hand.
I am just a Roman soldier
An ordinary man
I love my wife and children
I do the best I can
But how could I have killed Him
There must be someone else
I got to find an answer
I can't blame myself

I nailed Him there
This Child of peace and mercy
I nailed Him there
I am the guilty man
I nailed Him there
With my sins and my transgressions
I cried Oh my God, now I understand
When I turned and saw the hammer
In my hands

Thanksgiving Day Prayer

Lord, so often times, as any other day
When we sit down to our meal and pray

We hurry along and make fast the blessing
Thanks, amen. Now please pass the dressing

We're slaves to the olfactory overload
We must rush our prayer before the food gets cold

But Lord, I'd like to take a few minute more
To really give thanks to what I'm thankful for

For my family, my health, a nice soft bed
My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head

I'm thankful right now to be surrounded by those
Whose lives touch me more than they'll ever possibly know

Thankful Lord, that You've blessed me beyond measure
Thankful that in my heart lives life's greatest treasure

That You, dear Jesus, reside in that place
And I'm ever so grateful for Your unending grace

So please, heavenly Father, bless this food You've provided
And bless each and every person invited

Amen!

I want to be...

I want to be, beloved Lord,
Like clay in the potter’s hand.
Take my life, make it new,
I want to be a new vase.

I have known you and have loved you.
I asked for forgiveness and you heard me.
Yes, sorry
I offended you, forgive me Lord.
Because I love you and will never forget you.
I want to thank you for loving me.
I want to give thanks to you Lord.
Today I am happy that I met you.
Thank you for loving me too.
It’s always nice when one can find a small moment
of beauty during the liturgy that will carry you
forward during the week ahead. That’s what I
found tonight.

Prayer for Our Family

"O Dear Jesus, I humbly implore
You to grant Your special graces to our family this day.
In Your Divine Mercy make our home a shrine of peace,
love and faith.
I beg You, Dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of
us and our families absent and present, living and dead.
O Mary loving Mother of Jesus and our Mother,
pray to Jesus the Divine Mercy for our family,
and for all the families of the world.
Ask Him to guard the tiny infant in the womb, the cradle of the newborn,
the young in the schools and those about to start their vocations in life.
 Amen"

I Thank You, God, For Loving Me So

I thank You, God, for loving me so,
And I thank You for letting me know.
Thank You for sending Your Son,
To show You love us every one.
You didn't create us and walk away,
But You're right here with us every day.
Your Holy Spirit makes it clear,
That now and always You are near.
You supply our needs abundantly,
Air and sunshine fresh and free.
Water to drink and food to eat,
Good food like vegetables, fruits and meat.
Blessings more than I could earn,
New truths every day that I can learn.
When I am slow You don't clobber me,
But You're patient and kind as only You can be.
You don't ask for more than I can do,
You only ask that I trust You.
And that I always for You live,
And obey the instructions that You give.
My sins You've forgiven and forgotten,
Even though they are so vile and rotten.
My pride and ego want me to think I'm great,
But compared to You I just don't rate.
You are so great and good and all,
When I think of You I feel so small.
I'm thankful that You see what I can be,
If I allow You to live in me.
Your love and strength to me You give,
And You allow me for You to live.
I thank You, God, for loving me so,
And I thank You for letting me know.

A prayer for open doors

I NEED A DOOR TO OPEN...
Father in the name of Jesus, I pray you open doors
for the person
who sent me this as well as those I am sending it to.
Only you can open doors no man
can close and for that we honor you today.
Thank you for the open doors of life,
health, strength, prosperity, wealth, and love.

Also, thank you for closing the doors of death,
sickness, weakness, despair, poverty, and bitterness.
We love you today Lord and give you all the glory
and all the praise.

I seal this prayer in Jesus' name, Amen!!!
If you need God to open a door, pray
this prayer for the person who sent it to you
and for those you are sending it to.
Believe in your heart
and you shall receive what God has for you.
I need a door to open...
God closes doors no man can open
God opens doors no man can close.
If you need God to open some doors for you...send it on, and if you don't
need God to open some doors for you pass it on anyway.

Protect my Children

"Heavenly Mother, keep us always in mind of
Your Son's great mercy and understanding as we pray for
our children.
They are grown up now and have left us and are
living their own lives according to their own ideals.
We feel anxious and worried because they do
not seem to feel the need for Christ.
To understand the wisdom of His ways, or to be
fully at ease with us or themselves.
Intervene, dearest Mother, in their lives at the moment
You know to be right and help them to understand the
things that lead to their peace.
Help them to see the need of Christ and to experience the greatness
of His love, so that we may all proclaim as
You did, that His mercy truly is from generation to generation.
 Amen"

How Lucky I am..

I pause for a moment and think of the love and the grace
 that God showers on me:
I am created in the image and
 likeness of God;
I am God's dwelling-place.

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.
I remind myself that I am in the presence of the Lord.
I will take refuge in His loving heart.
He is my strength in times of weakness.
He is my comforter in times of sorrow.

I take my time to read the Word of God, slowly, a few times,
allowing myself to dwell on anything that strikes me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Fears:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same
As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

THE QUILT

As I faced my Maker at last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with the other souls.
Before each of us laid our lives, like the squares of a quilt.
An angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.
But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was.
They were filled with giant holes.
Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in everyday life.
I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.
I glanced around me.
Nobody else had such squares.
Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and all the bright hues of worldly fortune.
I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened.
My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty like binding air.
Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of the truth ...The others rose, each in turn, holding up their tapestries.
So filled their lives had been.
My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise.
My gaze dropped to the ground in shame.
I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes.
I had love in my life, and laughter.
But there had also been trials of illness and death, and false accusations that took from me my world as I knew it.
I had to start over many times.
I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow mustering the strength to pick up and begin again.
I had spent many lonely nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life.
I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully: each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.
And now, I had to face the truth.
My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it had been...
I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light.
An awe-filled gasp filled the air.
I gazed around at the others who stared at me with eyes opened wide.
Then I looked upon the tapestry before me.
Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, The Face of Christ.
Then our Lord stood before me, with love and warmth in his eyes.
He said: "Every time you gave over your life to me, it became my life, my hardships, and my struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let me shine thru, until there was more of me than there was of you."

What do you think of Christmas?

Seeing the stores all decorated with Christmas wreaths, and trees plus plenty of holiday catalogs coming thru mail months before Christmas, it makes me think and meditate in the real meaning of Christmas.
Seeing all these, I knew that I had to write something about it, and I have been searching for words but “the right words” or the “key words” to express and describe how I feel are not easy, since I see that Christmas has become a multi-million dollar profit for all stores worldwide.
But before I start typing away my thoughts and ideas, I need to ask myself:
1-"What does the word Jesus Christ mean to you?"
2- "What does Christmas Holiday mean to you?"
3- "How do your Catholic beliefs contribute to your quality of life, your expectations of your life and your life experiences?"

I believe the life of our Lord Jesus Christ was an example for us to follow, remembering, not forgetting his sorrowful ending, but the most important legacy for us Catholics and Christians are his teaching along the way.
And that’s how I have learned thru the Holy Gospel:
Follow His mission.- If it is a strong call, it may result in conflict with your earth-family, friends and community but your greater calling will always be to Your Creator, our Heavenly Father.
The satisfaction you feel out of acting on your calling will far exceed your discomfort from breaking off on your own.
When you do something that is new to others, you might be seen as a fool or dupe, but follow your heart and spirit.
Remembering that Jesus is your guide.
Many of us experience loneliness but remember that you are truly never alone.
Heal those that seek healing but know that some people find healing through their experience with physical hardship. Suspend judgment; do not think less of those that choose the "hard way".
Knowing your true connection to our Heavenly Father is wonderful, but does not mean that life will be "easy" or that your knowledge will improve all problems.
In fact, knowledge always brings responsibility.
Those with greater knowledge have a greater share of responsibility.
Everyone is a child of our Heavenly Father, treat everyone with respect.
Working with friendly people is a joy, but reaching out to those that believe and think differently than you is what it is all about.
I respect other people's beliefs about what the Jesus Christ's life means to them.
My experience is that when one focuses on the "negative", the negative seems to be there in full force, ready to be seen and experienced.
Those that are fully connected to reality but working through love and compassion will find that life is full of joy and hope.
One doesn't want to run away from reality, but one doesn't want to be stuck in unconstructiveness, sorrow and guilt either.
Now to bring things back down to earth a bit, perhaps we can look at the birth of Jesus in a general way.
I like to think about his birth and reconnect with his human incarnation, linking it to all of the births that had come before and still are today.
How miraculous is the birth of a child.
I pray that each child will be looked upon as miracle, a Chris, since we are all a part of the same God.
I encourage you to seek out what your particular religious tradition believes.
I would also encourage you to remain or become curious of other beliefs.
I know that in doing so; you will find your concept of life expanding and your options with also expand.
And never be afraid to allow your view of God to grow and change as you grow and change.

May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you and your family, now and forever, Amen.

THE SON

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art.
They had everything in their collection from Picasso to Raphael.
They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war.
He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.
About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door.
A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.
He said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.
He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart, and he died instantly.
He often talked about you, and your love for art."
The young man held out his package.
"I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this." The father opened the package.

It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man
He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting.
The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears.
He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture.
"Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift."
The father hung the portrait over his mantle
Every time visitors came to his home, he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
The man died a few months later.
There was to be a great auction of his paintings.
Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.
On the platform sat the painting of the son
The auctioneer pounded his gavel.
"We will start the bidding with this picture of the son.
Who will bid for this picture?"
There was silence.
Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, "We want to see the famous paintings.
Skip this one."
But the auctioneer persisted. "Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?"
Another voice shouted angrily, "We didn't come to see this painting.
We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!"
But still the auctioneer continued, "The son! The son! Who'll take the son?"
Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room.
It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son.
"I'll give $10 for the painting." Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.
"We have $10, who will bid $20?"
"Give it to him for $10.
Let's see the masters."
"$10 is the bid, won't someone bid $20?"
The crowd was becoming angry.
They didn't want the picture of the son.
They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.
The auctioneer pounded the gavel.

"Going once, twice, SOLD FOR $10!"
A man sitting on the second row shouted,
"Now, let's get on with the collection!"
The auctioneer laid down his gavel.
"I'm sorry, the auction is over."
"What about the paintings?"
"I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will.
I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time.
Only the painting of the son would be auctioned.
Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings.
The man who took the son gets everything!"
God gave his Son 2000 years ago to die on a cruel cross
Much like the auctioneer, His message today is, "The Son, the Son, who'll take the Son?"
Because you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything.-

For Christ has come

You are in your car driving home.
Thoughts wander to the game you want to see or meal you want to eat, when suddenly a sound unlike any you've ever heard fills the air.
The sound is high above you.
A trumpet? A choir?, A choir of trumpets
You don't know, but you want to know...
So you pull over, get out of your car, and look up.
As you do, you see you aren't the only curious one.
The roadside has become a parking lot.
Car doors are open, and people are staring at the sky.
Shoppers are racing out of the grocery store...
The Little League baseball game across the street has come to a halt.
Players and parents are searching the clouds and what they see, and what you see, has never before been seen.

As if the sky was a curtain, the drapes of the atmosphere part, a brilliant light spills onto the earth.
There are no shadows, None!

From every hue ever seen and a million more never seen.
Riding on the flow is an endless fleet of angels.
They pass through the curtains one myriad at a time, until they occupy every square inch of the sky.
North, South, East, West....

Thousands of silvery wings rise and fall in unison, and over the sound of the trumpets, you can hear the cherubim and seraphim chanting, Holy, holy, holy...
The final flank of angels is followed by twenty-four silver-bearded elders and a multitude of souls who join the angels in worship.

Suddenly, the heavens are quiet.
All is quiet. The angels turn, you turn, the entire world turns and there He is... Jesus.

Through waves of light you see the silhouetted figure of Christ the King.
He is atop a great stallion, and the stallion is atop a billowing cloud.
He opens his mouth, and you are surrounded by his declaration:

I am the Alpha and the Omega.

The angels bow their heads...
The elders remove their crowns...
And before you, is a Figure so consuming that you know, instantly you know: Nothing else matters...
Forget stock markets and school reports.
Sales meetings and football games!
Nothing is newsworthy...
All that mattered, matters no more...
For Christ has come.

Father, take this Anger off me..

Gracious God, sometimes anger seems so near to the surface of my life.
An unwelcome word, the remembrance of a past hurt, a disappointment I had not expected can make my emotions swirl with the force of a small cyclone.
Sometimes my heart feels hot, my nerves feel edgy, my mind feels like lit dynamite. And sometimes, I just turn silent, go inward, cut myself off from anything and anyone that could ease the throbbing inside.
I hold on to my anger, as if to let it go would render the reason for my anger meaningless.
I pray that your great love will burn away my anger and leave me settled in the cool breeze of your presence.
Help me let go, not only of the anger, but of what made me angry in the first place.
Let me breathe deep the wonder and peace of love. Amen.

Christian One Liners

Don't let your worries get the Best of you, remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road,
and the back of the church.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Quit griping about your Church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

God Himself does not propose : To judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Some minds are like concrete: Thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Peace starts with a smile.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

I don't know why some people Change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

A lot of church members who are singing "Standing on the Promises" are just sitting on the premises.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges.

  *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.

  *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

 *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

He who angers you, controls you!

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

If God is your Co-pilot - swap seats!

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

The task ahead of us is never as Great as the Power behind us.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

The Will of God never takes you to Where the Grace of God will not protect you.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

You can tell how big a person Is by what it takes to..........discourage him.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

The best mathematical equation I have ever see: 1 cross + 3 nails= 4 given.
